Our workshop program for Winter is out now, check out what's on in our website calendar!
Tutor: Alex Louisa
Gouache has a lovely matte finish that I find really appealing, but it does take a little bit of time to work out what kind of layering works best with this medium. I’m here to help you with that!
In this class we’ll begin by making some colour swatches to familiarise ourselves with the paint consistency we need, and we’ll test how our colours layer atop each other. Then I’ll guide you through painting a yellow butterfly on lovely toned grey paper, including how to paint a soft-edged shadow to really bring it to life.
At the end of the session you’ll go home with a 7 x 5″ (17.5 x 12.5cm) finished piece, which will fit into a standard sized frame if you choose, and your swatches sheet will be a helpful reference for your future gouache explorations. All materials are provided for use within the class.
About the Tutor:
Based near Brisbane, Australia, Alex Louisa mainly works with oils, PanPastel and watercolour, but she also loves to experiment with new materials. Her work focuses on elements of the natural world that grab her attention. Birds have always been her favourite subject (even her first word was “bird!”), but she also enjoys creating interesting still life compositions and landscapes.
Alex has exhibited through the US and Australia, and she teaches workshops to pass on her love of her favourite materials.
