This is a unique opportunity to learn papermaking from internationally renowned NT based artist Winsome Jobling.

Winsome’s art practice focusses on papermaking with plants and using experimental and unconventional methods to create embedded imagery and multi-layered papers. She has been making her own paper for over 30 years.

Paper doesn’t have to be a neutral support!

In this 2 day workshop, you will learn a range of techniques to apply to handmade paper before it is pressed and dried. These processes allow the images and artistic concepts to be embedded in the wet sheet.

You will learn how to use paper pulp to create patterns, imagery and stand-alone elements through the paper making process. The outcome of the workshop will be a practical resource of at least 6 different techniques that you can easily use again in future projects.

Creative techniques will include wax watermarks, stencils, spraying and pulp pouring.

Cost:

$500 per person including pre-prepared botanical fibre, felts to take home and use of all papermaking equipment for the 2 days.

Papermakers – bring pre-prepared botanical pulp to share and receive a discount.  Please contact Sandra to discuss.

About the Tutor:

Darwin based artist Winsome Jobling works primarily with handmade paper and experimental printmaking as well as sculpture and drawing. She uses many local plants to make her paper such as Spear Grass, Banyan Fig and the declared weed Gamba Grass. Her work is a haptic collaboration with the natural world and a response to our impact on it. Recent works explore the impacts of bushfires and climate change on the Top End Savannah.
She has exhibited regularly in Darwin and in 2016 the Museum & Art Gallery of the NT held the survey show Winsome Jobling; the Nature of Paper.
Jobling was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study papermaking in the USA in 2008 and maintains links with international practitioners through conferences, residencies and exhibitions. The most recent Residency was in 2019 at the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio.
