A Step Further: Combining Linocuts and Stencils

Sunday, June 30, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

$220.00

Do you have a finished linocut block but want to learn how to print it in different and exciting ways?

In this 1 day workshop, our guest tutor Rachael Lee will guide you through the art of stencil printing using an existing lino block as a foundation.   Rachael will share her more experimental approaches as an exciting alternative to the traditional way of inking and printing lino blocks.

You’ll gain skills in:

  • Designing stencils that complement your existing block
  • Creating successful prints with stencils using layering, ghost printing, masking, and working with positive and negative shapes
  • Overprinting of imagery to create depth and interest
  • Making clever compositions using line and shape
  • Employing pattern and repetition to upscale your designs

This workshop will extend your printmaking skills and breathe new life from your existing lino blocks. You’ll be rewarded with a playful day of creativity and the excitement of the reveal as you build up layers in your prints using stencils and then explore presentation possibilities.

Stencil material, inks, printmaking papers, and consumables are supplied.  For inks, we use Sakura high quality pigment oil-based inks which dry in 24hrs, and a non-toxic cleanup process. We’ll print on quality printmaking paper.

You’ll need to bring:

  • Apron and nametag
  • Lunch and drinks
  • At least one pre-carved lino block preferred size A4 (up to A3), we will be printing on paper 28 x 19cm
  • Stencil image ideas
  • Visual diary/notebook, pencil & eraser
  • Scissors, scalpel and cutting mat
  • Wear comfortable closed in shoes

Note:  This workshop is suited to those with prior knowledge of linocuts and requires you to bring your pre-carved lino block.

About the Tutor:  Rachael Lee approaches her art practice with the same curiosity that she brings to exploring her local natural surroundings. She works with non-toxic experimental printmaking techniques, creating layered works using linocut, etched linocut, stencils, collagraph, drypoint and monoprinting.  By combining shape, line and texture in her prints she seeks to highlight the underlying patterns, rhythms and soothing effects of nature.

Rachael is passionate about sharing her printmaking knowledge and over the last ten years has exhibited, given artist talks and run workshops for teachers, students and community groups in Southeast Queensland.

Below are some examples of work that Rachael has created using linocut blocks and stencils.
