Currently at Hive Studios, we are privileged to be hosting part of the Wall of Wings community art installation, with the hand printed birds flying and roosting on one of our downstairs studio walls. The installation measures 4 metres x 3 metres, and includes over 50 birds.
The Wall of Wings is an off-shoot of The Overwintering Project, an international community-based art project co-ordinated by Kate Gorringe-Smith, and is designed to raise awareness for our migratory shorebirds and their habitat by inviting artists to help make them visible.
The Wall of Wings was started by NSW artist Penelope Lawry for the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery Overwintering Project exhibition in 2019-20. Inspired by Hilary Lorenz’s Moth Migration Project, the Wall of Wings installation aims to create the feeling of being in a huge flock of migratory shorebirds. Images of the Wall of Wings installations can be seen on Instagram using the hashtag #wallofwingsmigratoryshorebirds or on the Facebook page ‘Wall of Wings – Migratory Shorebirds’.
On the wall, its very exciting to see the different personalities of the birds – some resting, some feeding, some taking off, and some soaring above the ‘mud flats’, or at the studio, they soar above the work benches. All of the birds depicted are migratory shorebirds and the palette is limited to brown, grey and black. This creates a feeling of cohesion and sense of community within the flock. All birds have been created using printmaking techniques including linocut, etching, dry point, aquatint, lithography, woodblock, collagraph, screen print, and rubber stamps.
The Wall of Wings project is ongoing, so if you’re interested in contributing to the project, you’ll find all the information you need HERE.
More information on The Overwintering Project is HERE.
The installation will be on show at Hive Studios for the next couple of months, so next time you’re at the studio you can admire the flock!
