Creative Hot Wax Techniques on Paper

Waxed Artist Book with Gelli Prints by Glenda Hennig

Explore and experiment with one of the oldest forms of art media – beeswax – dating back to the Greeks and Egyptians, and used today by artists as a wonderful creative addition to other materials.

Wax renders even fragile surfaces strong, enticingly translucent and virtually everlasting. Magic!  It’s a great way to transform your stash of drawings and prints.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Safely apply hot wax to a variety of surfaces: paper, card, fabric and wood
  • Experiment with wax techniques including transfers, layering, rusting, incising, stamping, rubbing and embedding
  • Incorporate your own drawings and prints, found images, and botanicals

All wax and heating equipment will be supplied.  As we will be dealing with hot wax and hot electrical appliances, safety will be a top priority.  You must wear closed in shoes during the workshop.

You’ll need to bring:

  • Cheap natural bristle brushes, various sizes
  • Small cards or heavy paper for supports: A5-A4
  • Various kinds of interesting papers for collage, colourful and textured is good
  • Tissue paper / lunchwrap / dress pattern paper
  • Photocopies or originals of prints and drawings, your own or found
  • Slightly pressed leaves/flowers
  • Optional: etching and/or pottery tools for incising and scraping

Note:  We are working with paper as a substrate, not doing encaustic painting on board.  But you will learn a lot about ways to use wax as part of your art practice.

Glenda Hennig

Glenda is a Brisbane based printmaker, papermaker, and maker of artist’s books. She has many years of art teaching experience, both in schools and for adults. Her art practice usually involves the places where we set up home; houses, gardens, or the natural world outside our back doors. She likes to explore lagoons and creeks and the trees, plants and creatures there, weeds and bugs included, making drawings, prints and paper that reflect her interest in what grows and lives in wilder urban spaces.
